You might want to check your $1 bills in your wallet before using them. Here’s why.

According to Wealthynickel.com, U.S. currency collectors are looking for $1 bills with printing errors, and some of them are valued up to $150,000.

There are 6.4 million of these banknotes currently in circulation with the error, all printed between 2014 and 2016.

The federal bank in New York issued one batch and a second was issued in Washington, D.C. The notes, however, have been in circulation for some time now and could be spread throughout the world.

How to identify whether your $1 bill is worth more than its face value

You can identify whether or not your $1 bill is worth more than its face value by looking at these characteristics:

  • The Series date located on the far right of the photograph of George Washington must read “Series 2013″
  • The bill has a “B” Federal Reserve Seal above the serial number located to the right of Washington’s photo
  • The serial number ends with a star () and fall between B00000001 – B00250000 or B03200001-B09600000

If your bill matches any of the descriptions above, you have to find the other bill with the same serial number to get the most bang for your buck.

To this day, only nine pairs have been found. This means there are millions of these bills still in circulation.

Wealthynickel.com stated that matching $1 bills with these errors can fetch between $20,000 and $150,000 depending on the banknote’s condition.

Why are these $1 bills worth more than their face value?

According to The American Numismatic Association, a nonprofit which studies the collection of currency, currency misprints are so rare that collectors see them as extremely valuable.
