Description

tluite'd own/@AW Www-TI! FREEMAN EMMONS, OF DANYERS, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 88,022, dated .Ma/rch 23, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN BooK-HOLDERS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it known that I, FREEMAN EMMoNs, of Danvers, in the county of Essex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Holding Open Leaves of Books, called The Emmons Book- Clasp and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a pait of this specication, in whicl1 Figure 1 is a perspective view.
Figure 2 is a pelspective view of it applied to a book.
A denotes the lower jaw, or body of the clasp, made of wood, or other suitable material, -provided with a shoulder raised suciently toreceive the cover of a book between it and the upper jaw of the clasp, marked B, which is a ,metallic spring, secured to the raised part of the lower jaw A, by a screw or other means, inclining toward and meeting the lower jaw A at or near the point.
C denotes an arm, or extension-rod,.attached loosely to the raised part of the lower jaw A, in any suitable manner, so as to allow lit to swing over the leaves of the book, without detaching the clasp. from the cover.
It is also turned in the form of a spiral spring at the inner end, directly over the raised part of jaw A, in order to give it sucient elasticity to hold the leaves in place.
It will be seen .that this rod can be extended, so as to apply it to books of various sizes.
In using my book-clasp, I insert the cover of the book between the jawsA and B of the clasp, open the book and s wingv the rod c over the leaves, thereby holding the bookgopen', vas shown in Iig. 2.
In turning a leaf, I simply swing the rod c at right angles with the clasp, turn the leaf, and swing `the rod back again over the leaves.
I claim a book-clasp, as .constructed and arranged,
substantially in the manner and for the purpose herein described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. FREEMAN EMMONS.
Witnesses:
EBEN. HUNT, Moses N. HUNT.
