Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM B.. TAYLOR AND JAMES F. SLOAT, OF BROOKLYN, E. D., NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM-GENERATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 80,431, dated July 28, 1868.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM It. TAYLOR and JAMES F. SLOAT, of the city of Brooklyn, E. D., in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and Improved Steam -Boiler; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specicat-ion, in which- Figurel is a vertical section taken on the line B B of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken on the line A A of Fig. l.
This invention appertains to the Vertical tubular variety of steam-boiler; and it consists of a novel arrangement of the tubes and tubeheads in relation to the lire-box and t0 each other, by which we are enabled to secure the advantages of an ascending and descending ue and superheater all within the compass of a simple cylindrical shell, while at the saine time we retain the strength incidental to that form of boiler.
The following description of our invention will enable any one skilled in the arts to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Similar letters of reference represent corresponding part-s of the different figures in the drawing above alluded to.
The lire-box or furnace of the boiler is represented by C, and directly over it the lower head, D, of the ascending tubes Gr is arranged, the upper head of these tubes being represented by E, which is also the head of the descending tubes H, the lower head whereof is made in the form of a crescent, as shown by H', Fig. 2, and forms the water-bottom of the boiler.
The steam-drum of the boiler is represented by E, and the superheating-chamber by I, the. upper end of which is closed by a cap, J.
The operation of this boiler is as followsthatis to say: The product of combustion rises up, in, and through the tubes Gr to the superheating-chamber, where it is arrested, and returned down through the tubes H into the flue L, and thence escapes in the chimney K.
In this style of boiler the steam and superheating space and surface comprise the whole of the space above the water-level, and of course vary in extent as the water rises or falls.
In the workmanship of the boiler there is nothing new. The tube-heads are made and the tubes put in and secured in the usual way; and so, also, is the shell of the boiler put together and inclosed over the tubes in the ordinary manner; but the invention consists in making the upward and downward flue by the arrangement 0f the tubes in relation to each other, the furnace, tube-heads, and chimney, leaving the superheatingchamber above, in the manner shown and described.
Having now fully described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Making a vertical tubular steam-boiler, substantiall y as described, and with the tubes,
water-spaces, steam-drum, and superheater arranged therein in relation to each other as set forth.
