Be it known that I, Fnanors BILLINGHAM, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, city of New York, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamps for Incandescent Gas-Burners, of which the following is a speci fication.
My invention relates to improvements in lamps in which Welsbach or similar gasburners are used; and the object of my invention is to provide a means whereby these burners, either singly or in groups, can be lighted from the outside of a suspended lamp without opening it or exposing the burners or mantles to the wind or weather. This I accomplished by a new and improved by-p'ass and flash-light, which is fully described in the following specification reference bein g had to accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved lighter, the lamp being shown in outline. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan of the light-transmitting tube. Fig. 3 is a detailed and enlarged cross section of by-pass gas-cock. Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view of gutter and flash-tube on line X X of Figs. 1 and 2; Fig. dis a view taken on line y y of Fig. 1, showing the hole 18in the globe, with the gutter and flash-tube" in section.
Similar numbers of reference indicate similar parts in the several views.
A by-pass cock 1, having a side outlet 2, is provided with a regulating-cock 3 to control gas-supply to the by-pass pipe 4, the cooks being placed above the lamps. The by-pass pipe 4 connects with a flash-tnbe'5. Secured to the lower side of this flash-tube are a series of rightangle or elbow burners 6, each one of which is pierced at its free end with a small hole, from-which a jet of gas escapes, when required, and they are so arranged that they direct the jet toward and within the globe.
. To protect the gas-jets and prevent the gas from escaping into the air, an inverted gutter or open leader 7, closed on three sides and at the free end but open at the bottom, is placed over that portion of the flash-tube 5 which is outside the'globe, said gutter extending the lamp-globe 8. In Fig. 1 the front side of the gutter is not shown, so as to show arrangement of the elbows or burners G.
The flash-tube extends to the inside of the lamp within the globe, where it connects with a hollow ring 9, which stands above the burners and is perforated by a row of small holes in its lower face. I prefer to use a ring which is placed centrally within the chimney, so as to permit the passage of the supply-pipe 10, which feeds the cluster 11, though a U -shaped terminal connected at the case will answer equally as well. The globe is pierced with a hole 18, about the size of the gutter and on a line with it, so that the dame or jet issuing from the elbows or burners will pass through from the outside to inside of the lamps and ignite the gas issuing from the ring, as will be explained in the operation.
A lever 12, secured between its ends to the bypass cock, affords a means for turning the gas on and off. Iprefer to use two chains 15 14, suspended from eachend of the lever, by which the latter is operated. Secured to the chain 13, which is on the side of the lever nearest to the by-pass tube and gutter, I use an indicator 15, the object of which is to show that when the indicator is on a vertical line with the" gutter (shown by dot-and-dash line) the by-pass is turned so that the gas passes simultaneously through the by-pass tube or pipe 4 and the stem or supply-pipe 10, and the plug will be in position within the barrel 17 of by-pass cock, as shown in Fig. When the chain is pulled still further, as shown by dotted lines, the indicator will be lowered accordingly and show that the gas is shut off from the by-pass tube 4. and is turned on full to the supply-pipe or stem 10. The regulating-cock 3 in the by-pass tube limits the supply of gas to be fed to the flash-tube and ring. \Vhen it is desired to entirely shut off the gas, chain 14 is pulled down and the by-pass cock shuts off all supply to both by-pass tube and stem, the position being, shown in Fig. 1 indicating that the gas is off.
WVith myimproved construction it will be seen that all the parts comprising the light :ing device are placed above the'burners, so that no shadows are cast thereby when the burners are lighted.

The operation is as follows: \Vhen it is desired to light the burners within the lam p,the regulating-cock 3 is turned on fulland chain 13 is pulled down until the indicator 15 is on a horizontal line with the gutter 7. The gas passes through the by-pass tube 4: and out of the elbows 6 and is prevented from escaping by means of the gutter 7. A torch or other exposed light is applied anywhere to the bottom of the gutter, which has by that time become practically filled with gas, and the flame lights the jetsissuing from the elbows 6. The regulating-cock 3 is adjusted so that any exlVhen the jets in the gutter are lighted, as stated above, the flames will flash successively from one elbow to the other toward the lamp, and the flame passing through the opening in the globe will light the jets of gas-issuing from the lower end of the ring, and as the by-pass cock supplies gas to the stem and clusters simultaneously with the by-pass tube and its connections the jets from the ring lights the gas,which passes through the Welsbach bu rners. When the chain is pulled down to its full limit, the supply of gas to the by-pass tube will be out off and the plug or gate-key 16 of the cock be turned on fullto the stem orsup- It is necessary to adjust the regulating-cock only once unless the pressure on the main pipe should materially change, when another adjustment to suit the altered conditions must be made. To extinguish the light, the chain 14 (the one having no indicator) is pulled down to its full limit, thus operating by means of the lever the plug or gate-key 16 of the by-pass cock and shutting off all supply to both the bypass tube and supply-pipe or stem. These operations are very quickly performed, and the burners Within the lamp are lighted without opening the lamp or exposing the burners or mantles to the wind or to the weather.
It is obvious that instead of using a bar or rod-lever, as shown, a fiat or cast lever can be used. In either case the lever is connected to the head of the gate-key of the by-pass cock with which it becomes operative. Any device may be used on the chain or lever of the by-pass cock as an indicator, and it may be set farther up or down on the chain without departing from the spirit of my invention;
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a lamp, the combination with a surrounding globe provided with an opening in one side, burners within the globe beneath the opening, a supply-pipe for the burners and a by-pass valve within the pipe; of a flash-light tube extending within the globe through the opening, above and in proximity to the burners, and being provided with perforations in its lower face, a pipe connecting the by-pass with the flash-tube, an inverted gutter over the flash-tube outside of the globe, and means for opcratin g the valve, substantially as hereinbefore slat forth.
2. In a lamp, the combination with a surrounding globe provided with an opening in one side, burners within the globe beneath the opening, a supply-pipe for the burners and a by-pass valve within the pipe; of a flash-light tube extending within the globe through the opening above and in proximity to the burners, and being provided with perforations in its lower face, a pipe connecting the by-pass with the flash-tube, an inverted gutter over the flash-tube outside of the globe, an indicator connected to the by-pass valve, and means for operating the valve and indicator substantially as described.
3. In a lamp the combination with a surrounding globe provided withan opening in one side, burners within the globe beneath the opening, a supply-pipe for the burners, and a bypass valve Within the pipe; of a flash-light tube extending within the globe through the opening, and being provided with perforations in its lower face, a pipe connecting the bypass with the flash-tube, a regulator in said pipe, an inverted gutter over the flashtube outside of the globe, and means for opcrating the by-pass valve substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a lamp the combination with the surrounding globe provided with an opening in one side, burners within the globe beneath the opening, a supply-pipe for the burners and a by-pass valve Within the pipe; of a flash-light tube extending within the globe through the opening, burners secured to the lower face of the tube and directed into the globe, a connection between the by-pass valve and flashlight tube and means surrounding the flashlight tube outside of the globe for preventing the escape of gas, a lever connected between its ends to the bypass valve, chains depending from each end thereof and an indicator secured to one of the chains, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. In a lamp the combination with a closed globe provided with an opening in one side, burners within the globe beneath the opening, a supply-pipe, a by-pass valve in said pipe and means for operating the same; of a flashlight tube standing partially within the globe above the burners, a hollow perforated ring at the inner end thereof, burners secured to the lower face of the flash-tube along its body, outside of the globe and directed toward the ring, means surrounding that part of the tube outside of the globe for preventing the escape of gas and a connecting-tube between the by-pass valve and the flash-tube substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
