NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
vJAMES M. COCHRAN, OF JACKSON, TENNESSEE.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 527,592, dated October 16, 1894.
I Application filed June 1l, 1894. Serial N0..514,20l. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. COCHRAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jackson, in the county of Madison and State of4 5 Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 1o it appertains tol make and use the same.
My invention has relation to wrenches adapted especially to be used for turning pipes, but it can be used for turning nuts, bolts, &c., and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a side view of the wrench. Fig. 2, is a cross sectional view of the Wrench at the pivot point of the two jaws. Fig. 3, is a perspectiveview of the link used to hold the jaws together. Fig. 4, is a detail view of the spring adapted to press the jaws apart.
The wrench consists of the lower jaw 1, the 2 5 rear end of which forms the handle of the wrench. The said jaw is provided with the in tegral protrusion 2, provided with the notches 3, and the integral perforated lug 4.
The upper jaw 5, is pivoted to the lug 4, by means of a bifurcated end'in which the lug rests, and the bolt 6, which passes through the bifurcated end and lug 4. The spring 7 is also provided with a bifurcated end having the curved points, 8, 8, by means of which said spring is secured at the pivot point between the two jaws. The other end of the spring is arched as shown and'is adapted to keep the free ends of the jaws apart. The jaw 5, is also provided with the integral protrusion 9, similar to the protrusion 2. The protrusion 9, is also provided with the notches 10. The free ends of the jaws 1, and 5, are enlarged by making them thicker transversely from the line 11,11, to theends. Said enlargements keep the link 12, from slipping Y I oft the jaws and also strengthen the ends of the jaws. The4 protrusions 2, and 9, also strengthen the jaws. The link 12consists of the perpendicular sides formed with integral end portions 13, 13. The inner longitudinal sides of the end portions Yconverge to an edge. (See Fig. l.) Said end portions 13, are adapted to rest in the notches 10, and 3, of thel protrusions of the jaws.
The gripping portion of the jaw 5, is provided with the teeth 14, and the gripping portion of the jaw 1, may also be provided with similar teeth if desired.
The wrench is operated as follows: To close the jaws 1, and 5, about a pipe, nut or bolt; 6o the said jaws are pressed together about the object to be turned and the link moved up in the notches. Thus the wrench is made to lit and grasp the object.
Having described my invention, what I f claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A wrench having its jaws pivoted together a perpendicularprotrusion on each jaw having notches, and a transverse enlargement on 7o each jaw extending from the endof the jaw to about the beginning of the perpendicular protrusion; a link adapted'to surround the jaws and work in the notches of the protrusions; said transverse enlargements adapted 7 5 to prevent the link from slipping from the jaw; an arch spring located between the jaws, said spring having a bifurcated end with curved points, said bifurcation adapted to lit around the pivot lug on one jaw and the end of the other jaw adapted to bear against said curved points, as set forth.
` In testimony whereotlaix my signature in presence lof two witnesses.`
