CAR-COUPLING TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 238,694, dated March 8, 1881.
Application filed December 29, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MURRY M. KIRBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alliance, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Car- (Joupling Tools; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side view of the tool folded for carrying it in the pocket, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the tool extended and ready for use.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Myinvention contemplates the construction of a tool or implement for adjusting the link from the platform or roof of a car during the operation of coupling, thereby avoiding the necessity of the brakeman going between the cars, and the danger incident thereto; and it consists in the construction of a telescopic extension-hook, which when folded can be conveniently carried in the pocket, so as to be always handy for use, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, B, O, and D represent the tubular sections of the implement, of which there may be three or more.
Each of these sections is made slightly tapering, so that when the sections are extended, as shown in Fig. 2, they will be firmly wedged together and form, so to speak, a rigid tubular rod or pole. The outer or largest section, B, forming the upper end of the pole, has an end button, I), and the terminal section, D, has a stout hook, A, which is recurved at its outer end to form a stop, a, which will prevent the link from slipping off of the hook in using the tool. The several sections B, G, and D are re-enforced at their outer ends by rings 6, f, and g, to prevent splitting of the tubes when the tool is extended.
With this tool the brakeman can manipulate the links in coupling his cars without endangering his life by going between them, and as it can be folded up into a small compass and carried in his belt or pocket when not in use, it is always handy and ready for use when required in coupling or uncoupling the cars.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The telescopic car-coupling tool composed of three or more tapering tubular sections, B, O, and D, provided with the end button, I), reenforcing-rings e, f, and g, and book A, as set forth.
MUBRY M. KIRBY. Witnesses:
J. L. RUssELL, SAML. V. ESSIGK.
