' Fi led may 28; 1942 A T TOQAVE Patented Jan. 18, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFF-ICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a one piece body for a garment. This invention is particularly intended for jackets, rain coats, and the like.
More specifically, the invention contemplates characterizing the one piece body by the fact that it is constructed of apiece of material having a vertical central portion forming the back of the garment, side portions forming the front of the garment, and certain extensions from the top of the vertical central portion to form the shoulder portions and the breast portions of the garment.
Still further the invention contemplates so constructing the one piece body that oblique sections of the side portions and the top extensions may be bent downwards for forming the lapels.
Still further the invention proposes the association of pockets suspended on the adjacent edges of the side portions with the breast portions, as will become clearer as this specification proceeds.
For further comprehension of this invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawings forming a material part of this disclosure Fig. l is a front view of a garment constructed from a one piece body made in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a back view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line li of Fig. i.
Fig. 5 is a developed View of the pattern of the one piece body.
Fig. 6 is a front view of the right hand half of the one piece body.
Fig. '7 is a. back view of Fig. 6.
Fig. 8 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but illustrating a modified form of the invention.
The invention may best be understood by first examining Figs. 5, 6 and '7. In these figures the one piece body is disclosed. It is formed from a piece of material having a vertical central portion Ill forming the back of the garment. Side portions l I continue from the sides of the central portion H] and form the front of the garment. Said vertical central portion H) is provided with top extensions l2 which have a neck opening l3 and which forms the shoulders and breast portions of the garment. The material M to the Ill) sides of the next opening i3 are adapted to be bent down the front, to form said breast portions of the garment. The sides I5 01' the top extension i2 and the inner top corners of the side portions it are cut curved so as to form the sleeve openings of the garment.
it is necessary that the central portion Ill and side portions l i be bent along the lines ab and ed. The portions it must be bent downwards along the oblique lines e) and gh. It should be noted that the points e and g are midway between the lines hi and a'lc. The line :ik is parallel to the bottom of the central portion l0 and passes through the corners of the portions 14. The points 6 and g are located on the line e and g which is also parallel to the lines 17c and bi. When the piece of material is folded, the oblique outside edge of the portions M will be disposed horizontal across the breast portions of the garment and must be sewed to the top edges of the side portions H. The top corners of the front panels of the garment may be bent downwards to form the lapels indicated by the triangular shaped dot and dash lines 121. in Figs. 6 and '7. The lapel portions are indicated in Fig. 5 by the lines m.
It should be noted that parts of these lines are in the side portions H while the remaining parts are in the portions 14.
After the body portion of the garment is constructed it is necessary that the usual sleeves 20, the collar 2|, buttons 22 and other trimmings be added. While a jacket has been illustrated on the drawings it should be noted that other garments may be constructed to embody this invention, in the form of rain coats, and the like.
Pockets 24 are suspended from the adjacent edges of the side portions II and the breast portions I4, see particularly Figs. 1-4 inclusive. Each pocket 24 has a top edge portion 25 which is secured to an edge portion of the breast portion l4. Each pocket 2t has a bottom edge portion 26 which is secured to the top edge portion of the adjacent side portion H. The pocket 24 is provided with a flap 2'! which is attached to the bottom edge of the breast portion l4. Each pocket 2-4 has a top section 28 which is normally held in a raised position by several snap fasteners 29 mounted between the top section 28 and the adjacent material of the breast portion l4. These snap fasteners may be opened by engaging ones fingers into the pocket 24 and pulling the portion 44 and top section of the pocket 24 apart. Then the pocket 24 will assume a much lower position. The snaps 29 may be reclosed, when desired.
The dominant feature of the one piece body re- Sides in the particular central portion, side portions and top extension and pockets, as already described, in which the usual two side seams, the two shoulder seams and the back seam on the present type garments are entirely eliminated and the garment is shaped to fit the wearer without such seams thereby reducing the amount of fabric used and reducing unnecessary labor.
In Fig. 8, the collar 2! is shown with a lapel continuation. The garment may also be made of the other styles.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiments of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise constructions herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a garment, an area of said garment being formed with an elongated slit, a pocket having front and rear walls and an open top, said front wall having its top edge secured to said garment below said slit, said rear wall having its top edge secured to said garment above said slit so that entrance to said pocket may be gained through said slit, and means for slightly raising the bottom of said pocket and holding it raised relative to said slit making it easier to retrieve small airticles resting on the bottom of said pocket, comprising fastening elements mounted on said rear wall adjacent the top edge thereof and engageable with complementary fastening elements mounted on said garment.
2. In a garment, an area of said garment being formed with an elongated slit, a pocket having front and rear walls and an open top, said front wall having its top edge secured to said garment below said slit, said rear wall having its top edge secured to said garment above said slit so that entrance to said pocket may be gained through said slit, and means for slightly raising the bottom of said pocket and holding it raised relative to said slit making it easier to retrieve small articles resting on the bottom of said pocket, comprising fastening elements mounted on said rear Wall adjacent the top edge thereof and engageable with complementary fastening elements mounted on said garment, said complementary fastening elements being mounted on the inside face of said garment at a point above the attached top edge of said rear wall and the material of the garment above said slit.
