1 Claim.

This invention relates to ornaments, and. in particular to a type adapted foruse on dresses, but particularly the hair and one which can be applied without manipulation of catches, pins or the like.

A particular object of my invention is to provide an ornament having a body portion and wing members, the latter of which are operated to bring about the attachment of the ornament to the hair. In ornaments of the character referred to, it has heretofore been the practice to provide a pin for attaching means, and one which necessitated careful insertion into the goods of the dress, or into the hair, and also means for locking the pins closed.

A further object of my invention is to provide an ornament of the character referred to having a fastening means which will eliminate the need of any locking member and will also permit attachment of the ornament easily and quickly and without any preliminary adjustment of the parts of the ornament.

Changes and variations may be made in the construction shown and described without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing its chief advantages; hence such invention is not to be confined to the structure shown in the drawing, in which:

Figure 1 is a plan view of the butterfly form 80 of ornamental device which may be decorated with any ornamentation desired such as jewels, spangles, or the like,

Figure 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2 showing the operation of the wing sections and means employed :for attaching the 40 ornament to thin material, netting or the hair, Figures 4 and 5 show modified forms of the body and wing arrangement of an ornament that is not in the shape of a butterfly or insect.

This application is a divisional application of Serial No. 36,323, filed August 15, 1935.

Referring to the drawing in detail, 5 indicates generally an ornamental member which consists essentially of a body 6 and wing portions 1. This ornament as illustrated in Figure l is de- 50 picted in the shape of a butterfly, but it is to be understood that the form of the ornament is not essential to the invention, as any ornamental form may be used that includes the body 6 and wings or side hinged members 1. 55 The body 6 and wings I may be ornamented with precious or semi-precious stones or designs 8 as desired; and at a suitable point intermediate its ends and at opposite sides thereof, the body 6 is arranged to have secured thereto as by soldering or any other means, the body hinge 5 plates 9, shaped to conform to the shape of the underside of the body 6 of the ornament. Inasmuch as both sides of the device are alike, a description of one side will suffice and it will be noted that the outer edge of the hinge plate 9 10 is formed with the spaced eyes l0, formed integrally with the plate 9. In order to mount the wing portions of the ornament for swinging movement with relation to the body thereof,

I provide the wing hinge plate II to? which is 5 secured as by soldering or otherwise, the wing 1. The wing hinge plate I i is provided at its outer edge with the upstanding ears 12 through which passes a hinge pin 13 that also passes through the eyes IU of the body hinge plate 9 20 and has its ends headed as at MA, to prevent removal.

Between the eyes in the pin i3 carries a spring I4 one end I5 of which, passing through a suitable opening in the body hinge plate bears 25 against said plate and the other end l6 of which, passing through a suitable opening in the wing hinge plate ll bears against said plate. The spring operates to keep the wings in normal position as shown in full lines in Figure 3.

The body hinge plate 9 and wing hinge plate N form an arcuate seat against which hair is compressed and held by the wing hinge plate extension I! which may be a part of the. hinge plate or attached thereto as shown in any suitable manner. The extension is curved as at [8 and constitutes a clip which securely holds hair and provides a means for attaching the ornament to the hair or other part of the person. The open position of the clips is shown in Figure 3, in outline and in attaching the device to the hair, it is simply necessary to pinch the wings until the clips open and then release the wings to cause the clips H to grasp the hair and compress it between the clip and the hinge plates.

In Figures 4 and 5, modified! forms of my device are shown for the purpose of illustrating the possibility of applying the construction to an ornament of any shape and in Figure 4 the body 24 may have the same shape as the wing portions 25. In Figure 5, the body 26 may be rectangular or square while the wings 21 are circular, it being evident that such combinations may be varied as desired.

What I claim is:

In an ornament of the character described, a body portion, wings at the opposite sides of the body portion, hinges for swingably securing said wings and said body portion together, said hinges being arcuately shaped, and arcuate extensions on said hinges cooperating with the hinges for maintaining the ornament in place on the hair of the wearer.
