Description

" NITED STATES PATENT FFIon.
MORITZ MAYER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,139, dated March 23, 1875; application filed March 9, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORITZ MAYER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Compound for Cleaning and Dressing White Fabrics, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to an improved compound for cleaning and dressing white kid gloves, morocco, sheep, satin, cloth, and other shoes, and similar white fabrics, so as to restore their original glaze and whiteness. The compound consists of a mixture of French chalk and salts of sorrel in water, underan addition of a small quantity of oxalic acid and bicarbonate of soda.
The compound is prepared in about the following proportions: One-fourth ounce of French chalk and one-fourth ounce of salts of sorrel (sal acetosella or binoxalate of potassa) are thoroughly mixed with two and a half ounces of water under addition of one-sixteenth ounce of oxalic acid and twenty-five grains of bicarbonate of soda, and a few drops of oil of mirbane for flavoring. These ingredients are thoroughly mixed, till the carbonic acid liberated by the action of the oxalic acid on the small quantity of bicarbonate of soda has escaped. The compound has to be thoroughly stirred previous to use, as the chalk settles at the bottom of the bottle, and it is applied by a small sponge to the articles to be cleaned, giving them one or more coats, as required, each coat being exposed to the open air for drying.
Any soiled or discolored parts, ink-spots, 850., Will be completely cleaned without hardenin g or injuring the fabric, which retains its original pliability, and is restored by the dressing to its former whiteness and luster.
Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A compound for dressing and cleaning white fabrics, consisting of a mixture of French chalk, salts of sorrel, oxalic acid, and bicarbonatc of soda in water, in the proportions and in the manner substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
MORITZ MAYER.
