UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN SILVERMAN, OF CHAT'IANOOGA, TENNESSEE, .ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 J'. RUSSEL EAR?, OF CHATTANO'OGA, TENNESSEE.
COMB.
Application filed November yTo all whomy t may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN SILvER.- MAN, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, of which the following is a specitication.
This invention relates to hair dressing and has special reference to a device for straightening wavy or kinky hair.
More particularly the invention relates to an improved hair straightening comb.
One important object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character.
A second important object of the invention is to provide a comb of this character having separate metallic teeth secured in position in an improved and novel manner.
A third important object of the invention is to provide an improved comb for the purpose seti forth wherein the teeth are curved in a peculiar manner and wherein the handle and tooth portions are separable so that the latter may be reversed in its relation to the handle thus changing the curvature from right to left or from left to right.
A fourth important object of the invention is to provide a. novel means for securing the tooth portion of such a comb to its handle.
lVith the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent. the invention consists in general of certain novel de tails of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specilically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is aside elevation of the coinplete comb in the form using straight teeth.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal'vertical section of the tooth portion of the device showing the inethod of assembly. u
Figure 3 is a perspective view showing part of the tooth \ortion partly assembled.'
Figure el: is an enlarged end view of Fig'- ure 1.
Figure 5 is a modified end view showing the teeth curved. Y
'Figure 6 is ai section on the line @#6 of Figure 2.
7, 1923. Serial No. 673,256.
Figure 7 is a perspective view of one of the curved teeth used herewith.
In the embodiment of the invention here disclosed there is shown a handle 10 having an opening extending longitudinally therethrough and provided on one end with a ferrule 11.
The comb proper consists of a series of metallic teeth 12 and a pair of metallic end teeth 13 which are thicker than the teeth 12. These teeth are each tapered laterally from butt 14 to point 15 and are provided with curved sides 1G, the sides being either equally convex as shown in Figure 4 or one side being convex and the other concave as shown inlFigure 5. Between these teeth at the butt portions are located metallic spacers 22 and each tooth and spacer is provided at the butt with a circular opening 17 and somewhat closer to the point but still near the butt with a square opening 1S. These openings are arranged to register when the device is assembled and, in order to hold the teeth together a square rod :20 is run through the square openings. being riveted at the end as shown at 21. This rod has its other end received in the opening 18 of a supplemental spacer 22 forming a washer against which the ferrule 11 bears. The rod 2() is held in place by the head 23 of a bar 24, this head engaging over the head 21 best seen in Figure 2. The bar 24 passes through the openings 17 and through the handle 10, being provided with a threaded end projecting from the handle for the reception of a butterfly nut 25t Thus the rod 24 serves to hold all the( parts in assembled relation, while the rod 20 prevents the teeth kfrom misalinement.
1n use the device is simply heated and drawn through the hair, the heated teeth acting to iron out the waves or kinks in the hair, thus leaving,` it smooth and straight.
1t will be obvious that, with teeth such as shown in Figure 7 the assembly may be made to cause the teeth to curve to one side or'tlie other as desired.
There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of tle kind described and for the purpose speciiied.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed new, is:
1n a comb of the` class described, a tooth portion comprising a series of teeth, a series of spacers arranged alternately with said teef h Said teeth and Spacers having registerhandle removably mounted on the remaining non-eireu1ar openings therein, a har ing'- end of the second har and having a ferpassing through said openings and oonformrule engaging one end of the tooth portion, ingin Cross Section to the openings to fit said second bar projecting through the 5 closely therein and prevent relative rotation handle and having 'its projecting' end 15 of the teeth and spacers, said bar having a threaded, and a thumb nut mounted on said head on one end, a second bar passing threaded end to draw the parte together. through the teeth and spacers and having a ln testimony whereof I atti); my signature head on one end overlapping the head on Y Y V 10 the first bar to retain it in position, a BENJAMIN SILVERMAN
