Description

E. R. TALLEY. I MASSAGE APPARATUS.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 6,1916.
Patented Jan. 16,1917.
EDWIN It. TALLEY, OF GRINNELL, IOWA.
MASSAGE APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 16, 1917.
Application filed May 6,1916. Serial No. 95,864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN R. TAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grinnell, in the county of Poweshiek and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Massage Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact descriptlon of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in massage apparatus and it relates more particularly to that class of devices in which the circulation of blood and stimulation of the nerves and tissues is accelerated by the action of a vacuum chamher and pump connected therewith.
To this end and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the novel construction of the device and in the peculiar arrangement, combination and adaptation of parts, all as will be more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a device comprising my invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the same.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by numeral, 1 designates the handle of a pump 2, the bottom of which is provided with a constricted opening 9, said handle being attached to the upper end of the piston stem 3, said handle being in the form of a ring adapted to receive the thumb of the operator. The pump cylinder 2 is of cylindrical form, of equal diameter throughout its entire length, and is provided at its upper end with a cap or cover 4. At its lower end said cylinder communicates with a bell-shaped receptacle 5, the enlarged lower end of which is provided with a rim 6, of soft rubber or other material adapted to the purpose. Upon opposite sides of the chamber 5, wings 7 and 8 are provided.
From the foregoing description, the operation of the device will be readily understood. through the ring 1 at the upper end of the piston and two of his fingers through the rings 7 and 8. The enlarged end of the bellshaped receptacle 5 is placed in contact with the part to be massaged and the pump is operated by the thumb of the operator, the device being moved from point to point as desired.
It will be noted that, when the piston is drawn away from the duct 9, a suction will be produced when the cup is held tight against an object and on the inner or return throw of the piston, air will be forced from the cylinder making a pressure pump, the alternate movements of the pump being adapted to produce first a suction and then a pressure against the surface to be massaged and tending to stimulate the circulation of the blood.
What I claim to be new is A cylindrical pump chamber provided at one of its ends with an open bell or funnelshaped chamber, a piston within the chamber, the upper end of'the piston being provided with a ring to receive the thumb of the operator, and the upper face of the bellshaped chamber being provided with openings to receive the fingers of the operator, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
EDWIN R. TALLEY.
Witnesses H. G. LYMAN, EDITH W. KENDALL.
