Abstract

The optical data carrier (1) has diffraction patterns (2) arranged along at least one data track, each diffraction pattern representing a bit sequence with a given number of bits. A light beam (10) directed onto each diffraction pattern is divided into partial beams (11, 12), corresponding to the different bits of the bit sequence, with the intensity of each partial beam detected to determine the bit value. The number of diffraction patterns is a whole power of 2.
