About the author (2017)

Born in Dorset, England, Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) was an English novelist and poet whose criticism of the strict moral codes of Victorian society is best exemplified in his most celebrated novels: Far from the Madding Crowd, The Mayor of Casterbridge, and Tess of the d'Urbervilles.Though schooled in London, and celebrated as a prize-winning architect, the young Hardy never felt at home in a city of social class division, or comfortable in his chosen profession. A student of the works of the progressive political theorist John Stuart Mill, Hardy returned to Dorset, married, and decided to devote his life to writing.
