About the author (2014)

Arthur Conan Doyle was born in 1859. He began writing short stories while studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh. His first successful work, 'A Study in Scarlet', was published in 1888 and introduced readers to the characters of Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. In total, Sherlock Holmes featured in 56 short stories and four novels by Doyle. Although Sherlock Holmes was not the original literary detective, Doyle's stories are considered milestones in the genre of crime fiction. Arthur Conan Doyle was knighted in 1902 and died in 1930.
