Lost Horizon is a novel by English writer James Hilton. It is best remembered as the origin of Shangri-La, a fictional utopian lamasery high in the mountains of Tibet. A veteran member of the British diplomatic service, finds inner peace, love, and a sense of purpose in Shangri-La, whose inhabitants enjoy supernatural longevity. The idea of Shangri-La is based on the concept of Shambhala, a mystical city in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition.

James Hilton was an Oscar-winning English novelist, and author of several best-sellers including Lost Horizon (which popularised the mythical Shangri-La) and Goodbye Mr. Chips.Hilton wrote his two most famous books, Lost Horizon and Goodbye, Mr Chips while living in a rather ordinary semi-detached house on Oak Hill Gardens, Woodford Green. The house still stands, with a blue plaque marking Hilton's residence.He was married and divorced twice, first to Alice Brown and later to Galina Kopineck. He died in Long Beach, California.
