Los Angeles in the 1930s. Installed in a sordid hotel in the slums, the young writer's apprentice Arturo Bandini fights for the hard survival, while he dreams of triumph after having managed to publish a story in a small magazine. Guided by his mentor and editor J.C. Hackmuth, Arturo proclaims himself a literary genius while dealing with a complex love affair with Camilla, a Mexican girl who works as a waitress. Unable to show her true feelings, Arturo finds himself drawn into a destructive love-hate relationship, while he continues to dream of achieving glory.
